Spectacular Deck Adds New Dimension To Downsize Living

A spectacular deck constructed from American Southern Pine has transformed the home and garden for a couple in a village near Leeds, West Yorkshire.

The quality of timber decking to bridge the divide between home and garden – bringing the inside outside – is one of the keys to its popularity. This feature, together with the suitability of decking for ground level variations, proved the perfect solution for the couple after they downsized to a bungalow with a large and uneven garden.

A splendid raised deck, measuring 12 ft x 32 ft, provides same-level access directly from conservatory and kitchen, replacing awkward steps that previously led from each door to an untidy York stone patio area.

The upper decking adjoins a spectacular lower-level, semi-circular deck, 35 ft in length, accessed by three steps along the entire length and width of the upper level.

The decking, installed by Deckor Timber of Harrogate, also extends along one side of the bungalow, providing an attractive and practical 30ft x 4 ft timber path linking the front and rear gardens.

The couple decided to move to a smaller property once their family were grown up. However, although they no longer required a large house, they decided upon a home with a sizeable garden.

The construction of such a large decking area reflects the outdoor space available to them and it in perfect scale to the size of the garden, which retains a large lawn, bounded by flower beds, shrubs and trees.

The homeowner said: “We are absolutely delighted with the result and we cannot fault the service and quality of work provided by Deckor Timber. The deck provides us with the perfect space for outdoor relaxation and entertaining and is going to add greatly to our enjoyment of home and garden.”

Colin Young of Deckor Timber said: “Decking was the perfect solution to the unevenness of the garden surrounding the bungalow. The upper level is easily accessed from both kitchen and conservatory doors and the linked semi-circular lower deck provides a magnificent soft contour adjacent to lawn and flower beds.

Colin added: “Treated Southern Pine is by far the strongest and best softwood available for decking and we give all our decks a 75-year guarantee against rot and decay.”

Eddie Pearce, European marketing director for American Softwoods, said: “Independent tests by TRADA Technology, the internationally-recognised timber research authority, have proved conclusively that Southern Pine is king of the softwoods – superior to those from Chile, Brazil, New Zealand and Europe.”

Southern Pine is harvested from sustainable forests in the USA, where 4.5 million trees are planted every day and where forests cover an area equal in size to Germany and France combined.
