Sustainable Forest Initiative – Again Accepted By CPET & UK Government

24 Apr 2009

Central Point of Expertise on Timber (CPET) announced the results of the 2008 assessment of the forest certification programs against their criteria for the UK government timber procurement.

The SFI programme was created to certify forests in the United States and Canada and has become one of the largest and fastest-growing certification programmes in the world.

I am pleased to inform you that the SFI program has maintained its status of ‘legal and sustainable’.

American Softwoods are sourced from well managed and sustainable forests where more saplings are planted than mature trees felled.

SFI President and CEO Kathy Abusow said :

“Meeting CPET’s rigorous demands is important to SFI Inc”.  “The UK Government is viewed as a leader in sustainable procurement of forest products as a result of this process, which is one of the most comprehensive and independent studies conducted to date on forest certification. This is especially important at a time when the demand for certified products is growing, and just 10 per cent of the World’s forests are certified”.

This is significant recognition as the procurement policy for the 2012 Olympics in London will be based on the CEPET assessment results.
